Brazil Smiling Program: See the step-by-step guide to getting a free implant through the SUS

There is a lot of talk about oral health, and how oral health can interfere with various aspects of the body's health.

One of the major problems affecting Brazilians is the absence of teeth. Losing a tooth at a young age can seriously harm the entire structure of the face and also affect chewing.

A shocking number is that released by the IBGE, which in 2015 found that 111,000,000 of the Brazilian population do not have any teeth, that is, approximately 16 million people without any teeth in their mouths.

For younger people this may seem absurd, but we have to remember what dental practices were like a few years ago.

16 million Brazilians without teeth.

For many years, Brazilian water was not enriched with fluoride as it is today. This project was only made official in 1973. Before that, Brazilian water was fluoride-free. This water enrichment improved the oral health of the population, but it is clear that it is not possible to make a continental country have fluoridated water overnight.

In 2008, 60% of Brazilian municipalities already had fluoride in their water. This project helped a lot to reduce tooth loss in Brazil, but in fact, we can imagine that those who were not included, that is, people before 1973 were subject to more dental problems.

Thus, these 16 million Brazilians underwent dental treatments where the solution was tooth extraction, unlike what happens today, where we have several procedures to maintain the tooth.

Aiming to serve this public, the SUS performs the dental implant procedure, aiming not only at aesthetics and self-esteem, but also at improving chewing and health as a whole.

How to perform an implant in the SUS?

Since 2010, the Ministry of Health has been financing, through Ministerial Order No. 718/SAS of 20/12/2010, the osseointegrated dental implant procedure (including the prosthesis over the implant).

All treatments are carried out at the Dental Specialty Centers (CEO) – Brasil Sorridente.
