More than two years after the United States embargo on Brazilian fresh beef, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) announced last week the release of meatpacking plants.
With the recovery, the Mato Grosso do Sul market sees the possibility of resuming negotiations and expanding business with the country.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) informed MAPA of the opening of the market for fresh beef from Brazil to the United States.

Positive Recovery
According to information from the Ministry, the head of the department, Tereza Cristina Dias, celebrated the resumption.
“Today, we are very pleased to receive long-awaited news: the reopening of the Brazilian fresh beef market to the United States.
This is news that we have been anxiously awaiting for some time and that I was happy to receive today. It is great news, because it brings recognition of the quality of Brazilian meat by such an important market as the United States,” said Minister Tereza Cristina.
From an economic point of view, the reopening of the North American market is excellent for all of Brazil, stated the deputy secretary of the Secretariat (Semagro), Ricardo Senna.
“Meat is one of the main internationally competitive production chains, we are in an important phase of conquering the opening of new markets
Therefore, the American market alone represents around 65% of what Brazil exported in 2019.
We export US$1.5 billion worth of fresh meat and they alone buy US$1.5 billion. We have huge potential to serve the North American market. So this news about the reopening of this market is certainly positive,” he said.
According to the president of the Association of Slaughterhouses, Cold Storage Facilities and Meat Distributors (Assocarnes-MS), Sérgio Capuci.
Therefore, a major opening of markets is always received with optimism.
“Whenever we open a market, it is positive. Mato Grosso do Sul has a great capacity to enable other plants for the United States.”
