Brazil has the fourth most expensive gasoline in South America, according to a study released this Thursday (27), by Cuponation, an online discount platform. The price of Gasoline Brazilian (R$ 4.45/liter) is only not more expensive than Uruguay (R$ 6.27/l), Peru (R$ 4.89/l) and Chile (R$ 4.47/l).
The result is based on information from Numbeo, a global price database that carried out a survey in early 2020 with 100 countries.

In the world, Brazil ranks 60th in the Cuponation ranking. In the global assessment, the most expensive gasoline price was recorded in Hong Kong (R$ 9.69/l), followed by Palestine (R$ 8.32/l) and Israel (R$ 8.05/l).
At the other end
On the other hand, unsurprisingly, Saudi Arabia is the country that charges the lowest price for gasoline (R$ 1.78/l), the same as Kazakhstan. In third place was Egypt, with R$ 2.13/l. Venezuela was not included in the survey.
The oil company is maintaining gasoline prices at refineries in Brazil, with the aim of trying to compensate for the losses it incurred throughout 2014, when it kept prices below international prices, to avoid passing them on to inflation.
“Although our country does not have the most expensive gasoline in the world, an important point to highlight is that the Brazilian population is increasingly stopping using their own cars – not only because of the cost of fuel, but also because of the stress and time lost in traffic,” Cuponation assessed. Petrobras sets fuel prices according to its own criteria and those of the government, which controls the company. The argument is that this way the company avoids transmitting volatility to the consumer – the price does not go up and down all the time.
The high fuel prices are not a problem for the Norwegian population, whose average income is the second highest in the world. Even with the high cost of fuel, the impact on the population’s income is well below average, with gasoline costs impacting only 0.92% of Norwegians’ daily earnings.
