Rainy Season Causes High Prices of Fruit and Vegetables in Goiás

Anyone who needed to buy vegetables, fruits and legumes in Goiás this week was shocked by the price found on supermarket shelves during this rainy season.

This is because the rainy season, specifically the intense rainfall in the last two weeks, caused an increase in the price of fruit and vegetables in the state.

Therefore, products such as chayote, carrots and green beans had an increase of 100%, according to information from the State Supply Center (Ceasa).

Prices due to rains

The manager of the site's technical division, Josué Lopes Siqueira, explains that the current rainy season is one of instability and fluctuation in prices due to the rains.

“We found that production fell and directly affected trade with several increases,” he said. Values varied 60%, 70% and even 100% in almost 20 days.

To give you an idea, on January 24th, the price of a box of chayote was R$60. This week, however, the price went up to R$120.

In the same proportion, carrots, which cost R$ 30 per box, went up to R$ 60. Okra, in turn, jumped from R$ 35 to R$ 50, while peppers reached R$ 50.

Price charged was R$ 30 before the increase.

As Josué explains, although there has been a drop, tomatoes are still on the rise.

The fruit box went from R$ 100 to R$ 70, but it is still classified by him as expensive and overpriced.
“The flooding in SP was local. The entire city was affected and there was a shortage of water.

However, there has been no change in Goiás so far, there has been no price increase as a result. There is a possibility that companies will seek products in our state, but for now there are no records. This, of course, could increase demand and prices could rise,” he highlighted.

Productivity Affected

“The values varied due to the rain. We had two weeks of intense precipitation, which ended up harming productivity and led to adjustments,” he said.

He mentions that the expectation is that there will be instability in prices until the weather becomes stable. “The forecast is that everything will return to normal in mid-April, as the weather becomes more stable and production increases,” he highlights.

Floods in SP

According to the Ceasa manager, the increase in prices is due to the rainy season in Goiás. He has ruled out, so far, any interference due to the floods in São Paulo.

In the early hours of this Monday (10), the São Paulo Warehouses and General Stores Company (Ceagesp) was completely flooded due to heavy rain.
