Bolsonaro contradicts science and says isolation was useless against Covid-19

Bolsonaro made a point of contradicting scientific research and experts, he stated this Thursday (30) that social isolation had no impact on flattening the infection curve of the new coronavirus.

He says (without data or evidence) that 701,000 people will be infected. And, apparently, based on what we're seeing now, all the efforts to flatten the curve have been practically futile. Now, the consequence of this? The side effect of this? Unemployment," the president said in his weekly live broadcast.

The head of state, however, did not present data showing that there was no benefit from the isolation and containment measures adopted throughout the country.

Bolsonaro contraria ciência e diz que isolamento foi inútil contra Covid-19

Bolsonaro contradicts an entire scientific consensus around the world

He's been adopting this anti-science stance for a long time. Since the beginning of the crisis, he's been advocating for an end to isolation and downplaying the impact of Covid-19, which has already left at least 6,000 dead.

The president has been disregarding social distancing recommendations, taking walks through commercial areas and promoting crowds.

The situation in the country is not at all encouraging. Brazil has a total of 85,380 confirmed cases, surpassing China in the number of infected people and ranking 10th. Authorities are concerned that this number will double.

The Asian country has 83,944 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US, which is monitoring the pandemic.

In contrast, Teich, the Minister of Health, said that a relaxation of social distancing should not occur while cases of the new coronavirus are on the "rapid rise."

Again, without specific data, the president is emphatically advocating for the easing of social distancing.

As we reported here, this topic was one of the points of tension between the president and former Health Minister Henrique Mandetta and is constantly used by the head of the Executive to criticize mayors and governors.
