In São Paulo, the state government is receiving reports of businesses remaining open. Between March 20 and 30, there were 6,899 reports of businesses operating normally despite the government's quarantine order.
The state government reported that despite the complaints, the public has generally cooperated with municipal decrees regarding the closure of commercial activities. So far, 30 non-essential establishments have been closed for failing to comply with the decision. One establishment was fined R$1,400,000 (R$1,231.65) under Law 16,402.
"It is important to emphasize that the objective is not to fine, but rather to avoid crowds to reduce the risk of transmission of the coronavirus and protect the population, in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization," the city government said in a statement.
According to the Municipal Secretariat of Subprefectures, since Friday (20), around 2,000 agents have been working to raise awareness among merchants and street vendors about keeping their establishments closed. Businesses that fail to comply with the decree will be subject to immediate closure. In case of resistance, the operating license, Term of Permission for Use (TPU), or temporary authorization will be revoked.
Number of infected people grows in Brazil
