What is BNDES?
Founded in 1952, during the 2nd Vargas government, the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) is a federal public company headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. However, it has offices distributed throughout Brazil.
It is one of the largest development banks in the world and a central tool of the Federal Government for long-term financing and investment in all segments of the Brazilian economy.

BNDES seeks to prioritize support for entrepreneurs of all sizes, including individuals. This ranges from the implementation of modernization and expansion projects to the creation of new businesses. It is always guided by the potential for generating jobs, income and social inclusion for Brazil.
Direct and indirect support
BNDES support is provided as follows:
- through investment financing;
- subscription of securities;
- provision of guarantee;
- and granting of non-refundable resources.
All of these are projects of a social, cultural and technological nature.
The Bank operates through products, programs and funds, depending on the type and characteristics of the operations.
It is worth noting that as it is a public company – and not a commercial bank -, the BNDES evaluates the concession through a hierarchy in which at the top is the socio-environmental and economic impact in Brazil.
Encouraging innovation, regional development and socio-environmental development are priorities for the institution.
BNDES also offers unique conditions for micro, small and medium-sized companies, which are those with annual revenues of up to R$300 million. In addition to the social investment lines, directed towards education and health, family farming, basic sanitation and urban transport.
In crisis scenarios, the Bank also has a basic countercyclical role, that is, actions aimed at preventing, overcoming or minimizing the effects of the economic cycle. As well as assisting in formulating solutions for the resumption of economic growth.
BNDES is present to support the country’s growth wherever it is needed.

BNDES Knowledge
Since its creation, the bank has participated in several important discussions in Brazilian economic history, such as the development of economic plans and assistance in the formulation of public policies. It has also historically participated in the structuring of development institutions.
BNDES acts as a center of knowledge and discussion on possible paths for Brazilian development.
“The Bank has always had to read what the Brazilian moment required and had to be ahead of the curve – which I identify as part of the Bank’s DNA, of its people –, which generated discussions, sometimes heated, and different views.” Sergio Eduardo Weguelin Vieira, economist, year of testimony: 2012.
The creation and sharing of knowledge is one of the Bank's core activities. This knowledge, generated internally from sectoral studies and macroeconomic analyses, is what underpins the institution's decisions and other activities, such as financial support for ventures and the structuring of public concession projects and public-private partnerships.
The bank's trust in the importance of knowledge for the country's development also generates support for the production of studies and research in economics. The entity does this through awards and public notices, in addition to disseminating its own studies in printed and digital publications edited by the Bank.
And for that reason in the BNDES website There is an exclusive section for the topic knowledge.
