Chinês que chegou aos EUA sem falar inglês fica US$ 4 bi mais rico durante a pandemia

Brief history of his trajectory marked by challenges.

According to Folha editorialIn 1987, Eric Yuan was an applied mathematics student at Shandong University in China, looking for an easier way to interact with the girl he had a crush on.

However, the concept only became a product 24 years later, in mid-2011, but the voice, video and — now we know — online meetings and parties program gave the businessman a marriage, three children and his face on Forbes magazine's list of billionaires for the first time.

Who is this guy anyway?

For those who don't know, businessman Eric Yuan is the founder of the videoconferencing company Zoom, which became popular during the coronavirus pandemic for allowing meetings of up to 500 people amid social distancing rules.

It is known that before the coronavirus, Zoom had around 10 million meeting participations per day, today there are 300 million, even with the threats of virtual attacks that put users' privacy at risk.

On Yuan's fortune and success even in the pandemic

Yuan, who is now 49 years old, half of which he has spent in the United States, saw his wealth reach US$7.8 billion (almost R$45 billion) in 2020 – US$4 billion (R$22 billion) in the first three months of the year alone.

If we look at the company's growth line, we will see that in just two months, Zoom shares rose 50% – while the stock markets melted amid the crisis.

Another detail of astronomical growth: the group that was worth US$1.5 billion (R$1.5 billion) before the pandemic, is now quoted at US$1.5 billion (R$1.5 billion).

In a statement to Forbes, he said:

“I feel like it was overnight, in every country, everyone realized they needed a tool like Zoom to connect. From that perspective, we are very proud. We saw that with what we are doing here, we can contribute a little bit to the world.”
