A company from Rio Grande do South launched a line of vegan and biodegradable shoes that use fabric made from pineapples.
Since the creation is by Spanish designer Carmen Hijosa, Insecta Shoes guarantees that the material is as resistant as animal leather.
To make one square meter of pineapple “leather,” called Piñatex, 480 pineapple leaves are used, taken from around 20 pineapples.

"Since pineapple is the second most popular fruit in the world, its global production generates 25 million tons of waste every year. What is considered 'trash' can become super-resistant and flexible fabric for your shoes," explains Insecta Shoes.

Pineapple fabric uses less water and chemicals in its production, does not require extra fertilizers, and is made from materials that would otherwise be discarded.
Meanwhile, Insecta Shoes also produces shoes by reusing vintage clothing and producing ecological fabric made from recycled PET bottles.

All shoes are produced in Rio Grande do Sul, with two models made with Piñatex, sold for R$ 239 and 319 online.
