In a meeting surrounded by mystery, the indigenous people do not know clearly what topics were discussed by the Vice President of the Republic and president of the Amazon Council, Hamilton. Mourão, with Governor Gladson Cameli this Wednesday, 11th. However, the environmental issue, one of the most controversial topics of the current government, was the subject of the press conference given by Mourão before returning to Brasília.

Despite having a different language and customs, they have to acquire external knowledge and cultures. This is necessary so that this national minority can, in the face of the dominant culture, establish its rights and demands to the country to which they are subordinate.

“Indígena Não Pode Viver Como Um Ser Dependente Do Estado”, Diz Mourão Durante Agenda No Acre 12 março de 2020

Regarding the proposal presented by the Federal Government for the exploration of indigenous lands, Mourão said that the Indians need to have their own source of income and stop depending exclusively on the State.

Indigenous people have their income

“This is a government proposal and, like all proposals, it needs to be discussed with Congress. What we want is to create alternatives so that indigenous people can earn an income. What cannot happen is for indigenous people to be exclusively dependent on the government,” Mourão emphasizes.

The Vice President cited examples of experiences that resulted in income for indigenous people. “A successful example is the Parecis in Mato Grosso.

On 2% of their lands they plant soybeans and are able to earn an income, which gives them an income and a greater capacity to maintain their culture and traditions. So instead of waiting for the government to put them on Bolsa Família or any other social benefit so they can survive.”

Although it is not yet entirely clear how far the responsibility and power of the Amazon Council will go, Hamilton Mourão assured that the environmental area will be one of the topics involved. “In addition to other responsibilities, the Council will be a response to critics who claim that the government has no responsibility for the environmental area.”
