Initially, everlasting flowers are flowers often used in crafts, as the name suggests, they are flowers that do not lose their colors even with time, they have bright colors. MG receives award.

Sempre-vivas receives the award

As well as the practice used, it has the title by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) as a World Agricultural Heritage Site. This is the first Brazilian title. In the world to date there are 57 heritage sites, a highlight for us Brazilians.

Even so, the mining region belongs to a poor population that lives off artisanal work and products produced by residents, the so-called roças de toco, where they plant beans, corn, fruits, and vegetables.

Therefore, to arrive at the winner, there was a selection in 2016 among 5 locations in the country, the region of Diamantina in Minas Gerais was one of them. The region that stood out the most was Serra do Espinhaço, there are 30 municipalities in the region, among them the communities of Diamantina, Buenópolis and Presidente Kubitschek.

Therefore, to apply you needed to have some characteristics such as:

  • Have a distinctive and remarkable landscape;
  • Rich biodiversity;
  • Differentiated management model
  • Food Safety;
  • Production technologies
  • Cultural Identity.

The people responsible for telling the story of the flowers collected for the crafts and creating the dossier were the universities:

  • UFMG – Federal University of Minas Gerais;
  • UFVJM – Federal University of the Jequitinhonha Valleys;
  • UFJF – Federal University of Juiz de Fora;
  • Unifesp – Federal University of Sao Paulo.

Over the centuries, practices have been carried out in areas where the soil and relief have the characteristics for managing flowers, as well as human intervention in a sustainable manner.

In short, the practices of everlastings with recognition bring several benefits to the region, with increased employment, a vision of investment, public policies and income for the population.
