Projections made by the Health Department indicate that the peak of Covid-19 in Minas Gerais could occur from May 4th onwards thanks to the support of the population.

The Minas Gerais State Health Department (SES-MG) projects that the peak of COVID-19 cases in the population will occur between May 4th and 5th, not at the end of April as in the last projection released.
“Current projections indicate that the peak of the population's infection, which was previously predicted for the end of April, is now expected to occur on May 4th or 5th. In other words, we are slowing the spread of Covid-19 in Minas Gerais and this is due to the population's support for (social) isolation,” the secretariat reported.

Situation in Minas Gerais

In the state of Minas Gerais, there are now 614 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and there have been 14 deaths. Another 97 deaths are under investigation.

This past Wednesday (8), it has been one month since the first case of infection was confirmed in Minas. Since then, there has been a significant increase in the demand for care in the state's hospitals. Particularly noteworthy are cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). According to the Health Department, there was an increase of 2,71% in the number of hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases in the first 14 weeks of 2020 compared to the same period last year.

In 2020, Minas Gerais has already recorded 2,526 hospitalizations due to respiratory syndromes, compared to 681 for the same reason in the first 14 weeks of 2019. The biggest fluctuation was recorded in the third week of March: there were 716 hospitalizations due to SARGs compared to 80 in the same period of 2019. Configuring an increase of 795%.

"Despite the fact that we are in a period of influenza virus circulation, there has been an increase in hospitalizations due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome compared to previous years. This increase cannot be explained solely by the circulation of the influenza virus. This leads to the possibility of a higher number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19," said the State Department of Health.

The institution highlighted the seriousness of the moment that, in 2016, “we experienced one of the worst seasons of Influenza A/H1N1, the number of hospitalizations was not as high as it is now”.
