The World Health Organization has stressed the importance of younger people taking care of themselves. Coronavirus can also be dangerous for younger people.

This Friday (20), the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted that although coronavirus infection is more lethal for the elderly, the younger population is not immune and is also at risk.

“One of the things we are learning is that while older people are the hardest hit, younger people are not spared,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

OMS ressalta que coronavírus também atinge jovens

The director said that recent data from the UN health agency shows that people under 50 represent a significant proportion of patients who need to be hospitalized. In these situations, the most serious cases are respiratory syndromes.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 401,000 cases of severe Covid-19 infection were among people between the ages of 20 and 54. The most lethal cases were among older people.

Fighting the disease

“Today, I have a message for young people: You are not invincible,” Ghebreyesus said. “This coronavirus can put you in the hospital for weeks or even kill you. Even if you don’t get sick, the choices you make about where you go can make the difference between someone else’s life and death,” he said. “Solidarity is the key to fighting COVID-19, between countries and between people.”

Tedros also pointed out that even for those who do not have symptoms, staying home can make the difference between life and death for others. The World Health Organization has highlighted the call for social distancing and recommended some ways to stay healthy during this period of isolation.

According to the organization, it is important to maintain a healthy diet. Avoid habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Other tips include trying to maintain a daily exercise routine by following exercise videos. Going up and down stairs or even dancing indoors.
