The EPTC (Public Transport and Circulation Company) city hall released this Friday (6), the technical calculation of the public transport fare. However, the process was sent to Comtu (Municipal Urban Transport Council), which will have seven days to assess it.

The Council meeting will be next Friday (13), at 3:30 pm, in the EPTC auditorium (Rua João Neves da Fontoura, 7). The calculation made by the technicians, based on the criteria established by law, according to the enterprise, resulted in a tariff of R$ 5.05 (technical value of R$ 5.0492).

Prefeitura De Porto Alegre Define Reajuste Da Passagem De Ônibus Para R$ 5,05 06 de março 2020

Most expensive ticket

This represents an adjustment of 7.45% compared to the previous year. Although the City Hall states that if the projects sent to the City Council are not approved, Porto Alegre will continue to have the most expensive bus fare among Brazilian capitals.

Since 2017, the municipal government claims to have presented alternatives to make the public transport system fairer and prevent the already high ticket price from becoming even higher.

However, the initiatives mentioned include sending five other bills to the City Council in January for consideration by councilors, with the aim of reducing the fare to R$ 3.70 this year and, in 2021, setting it at R$ 2.00 for general users; R$ 1.00 for students; and free passes for all formal workers.

Therefore, according to the Executive, the measures proposed are “plausible, urgent and would directly benefit the vulnerable part of the population, who yearn for cheaper transport”.

“We, the mayor and city council members, have the opportunity to make Porto Alegre the first capital to effectively lower fares or continue to have the most expensive fare among capitals. That is what is at stake,” warns Mayor Nelson Marchezan Júnior. “The proposals were designed for those who need it most, residents of remote areas who use public transportation,” he adds.

The projects are part of the Citizen Transport package. The request from Seopa (Union of Bus Companies of Porto Alegre) was for an increase of R$ 0.50, which would raise the value to R$ 5.20.
