ABES Growth

Data from the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) reveals growth of 6.7% in the global IT sector, with the segment growing by 9.8% in Brazil.

Although the result exceeded local expectations, which were 4.1%, and was above the 4.5% achieved between 2017 and 2018.

The domestic market generated US$$ 46.6 billion last year. Of this total, US$$ 23.9 billion (51.3%) was related to hardware investments, US$$ 12.2 billion (26.2%) to services and US$$ 10.5 billion (22.5%) to software.

In total, there are around 19,372 thousand companies operating in the Software and Services sector in Brazil, of which 5,294 (27.3%) are focused on software development and production.

However, earlier this year, the largest professional social network, LinkedIn, released the “Emerging Professions” survey for 2020. This study indicates that professions related to the information technology (IT) and internet sectors are expected to predominate in the job market.

Emerging professions

This is how the research ranked the 15 emerging professions in Brazil and, of this total, 13 are directly related to IT or the internet.

Fabrício Fávaro, administrative director of ITMaster, a company in the Globalsys group, says that the sector has grown over the years and is also very booming in Espírito Santo.

"The market is constantly looking for IT professionals here in the state, especially in the development area. Our company has contact with universities to qualify the training of these professionals.

Therefore, the demand for this professional is very high, not only here, but throughout the country there is a great demand for people to work in the IT sector”, he says.

Tito Fideles, financial director of Madan, an institution focused on preparatory courses, says there has been an increase in interest in courses related to technology and the internet.

“It is a global phenomenon. These are the sectors that involve digital technology. We are in the digital age, which evolves rapidly and creates new positions, professions and, consequently, interest in them in the job market.

Therefore, the greatest demand for courses is for Medicine and Engineering, which continue to have the highest cut-off grades. Within engineering, we can see a greater shift towards Computer Science. In some universities, such as ITA, Programming subjects have become part of the curriculum of all engineering courses”, he says.

According to Zirlene Effgen, coordinator of Information Technology courses at UCL College, the demand mentioned by Fideles occurs because the IT area has high employability.

IT Students

“However, our third-year students are practically all doing internships. This is difficult to happen, just compare it to other courses. IT students do not graduate without being employed.

However, in the seventh or eighth period, they are already competing for job openings. The development areas are areas that absorb a lot of our students. Although there is a very high demand. Several areas were affected as a result of the crisis, but the IT area remained and employability did not fall”, he comments.
